January 7, 2006: The already existing Alumni Society of LU refused to give up and held an informal meeting (rather a get-together) on Saturday. Society president advocate Ram Kumar Bhargava declared that their alumni body would work for the development of LU.

SPLITTING LUCKNOW University's alumni body pains old students. Regretting the split of the association, Justice AS Anand, former Chief Justice of India, said: "I was moved and disappointed when I learnt about the division. I wonder how such division could ever take place." Justice Anand was speaking at an informal get-together of Alumni Society of LU.

He pointed out that old students had a crucial role to play. "Pass-outs must work as a link between old and contemporary students. Old students must pass on the ethos, tradition and culture of the varsity to new students. It is the responsibility of the association to see that culture and ethos are imbibed by new students," he said and called upon old students to give their bit to their Alma Mater.

"Today students do not even mind smoking cigarette and throwing smoke on their teacher's face. The need of the hour is to give direction to students," Justice Anand insisted.

He pointed out that after parents it were the teachers who feel immense pleasure when we achieved some high position in society. "When I became Chief Justice of India one of my teachers sent me a message that read: I had seen it in you. It was a great privilege for me," he said.

Another alumni, SAT Rizvi, chairman of the third State Finance Commission recalled how disciplined they were when they were students of LU.

Addressing the gathering, society president advocate Ram Kumar Bhargava regretted over the formation of parallel alumni body by the LU administration.
