Relay hunger strike at IIT over quota issue

Students are protesting the passage of a Bill by Parliament for providing reservation to OBCs in higher educational institutions.

Students at the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur have begun a relay hunger strike to protest the passage of a Bill by Parliament for providing reservation to OBCs in higher educational institutions.

"Five students of IIT and five from Kanpur University and other technical institutions have started an indefinite relay fast from midnight," Youth For Equality spokesman Chandra Shekhar said.

The IIT research student said they will be replaced by another batch from midnight.

He also protested police action on protestors in Benaras Hindu University.

Shekhar said if the government tried to stop their agitation, students would "take to the streets".
