Australia, however, are hoping he does not as the world champions try to avoid going 2-1 down in the five-match series.

Jones was forced from the field and taken to hospital during the final session on Saturday as Australia, following on and needing 259 to avoid an innings defeat, closed the third day at Trent Bridge on 222 for four.

England said in a statement that Jones, who took five wickets in Australia's first innings, had been fitted with a surgical boot and would have ice treatment before being assessed again on Sunday morning.
