Italy clinched their fourth World Cup title after beating France 5-3 on penalties in a match that saw Zinedine Zidane red-carded in dying minutes on Sunday.

Penalty shoot-out

1-0 Italy: Andrea Pirlo scores with a shot straight into the net.

1-1 France: Sylvain Wiltord beats Ginaluigi Buffon, who dives to his right and guesses wrong.

2-1 Italy: Marco Materazzi scores to keeper Fabien Barthez's left.

2-1 France: David Trezeguet's shot goes off the crossbar and bounces just on the wrong side of the line.

3-1 Italy: Daniele De Rossi scores high into the net.

3-2 France: Eric Abidal beats Buffon, who dives the wrong way.

4-2 Italy: Alessandro Del Piero scores high into the net.

4-3 France: Willy Sagnol converts his penalty.

5-3 Italy: Fabio Grosso beats Barthez who dives right, with the ball going to his left.

Additional time (Italy 1 - France 1)

Winner to be decided from penalty shoot-out after 30 minutes of additional time fails to break deadlock.

105 min: What a save by Buffon! Zidane almost wins France the World Cup. But his header is deflected out-of-play by Italian goalkeeper.

101 min: Ribery gets close to scoring a goal. But his low-speed shot is lapped up by Buffon.

Full-time (Italy 1 - France 1)

Regulation time is over as yet another game moves in extra-time. Despite 90 minutes of high-velocity football, both teams are deadlocked at 1-1. Next 30 minutes could decide the fate or a tragic penalty shoot-out would be required to declare the winners

90 min: Only two minutes are added to the second half. Will we have a late goal or is extra time going to have to decide this final?

80 min: Zidane injures his right shoulder, but gets back on feet after recieving treatment.

75 min: French dominance has ended. Both teams try to tease each other's defence. Just 15 minutes to go!

66 min: Italy attack from left flank - Toni drills the ball into the goal - But referee gives off-side to cut short Italian celebration. Replay confirms referee's call.

61 min: Italy Substitution. Totti, Perrotta substituted for Iaquinta, De Rossi.

57 min: France Substitution. Patrick Vieira injures his hamstring and promptly replaced for Alou Diarra. A big blow to France.

55 min: France on song here in search of a quick goal. Five dangerous attempts on goal in five minutes but none is converted. France in full control of the game.

46 min: Henry storms down the left and fires a shot on goal, but it's a bit too slow. Buffon saves easily.

Half-time (Italy 1- France 1)

Italy with 57% possession looks a tad ahead of France. After Les Bleus took early lead courtesy Zizou's penalty strike, Materazzi got the Azzuri back in the game converting Pirlo's corner kick.

42 min - Now Italy's Toni on the prowl! Toni's laser header just clips the bar. Nearly 2-1!

30 min - It's a great final so far with two goals in the first half-hour. It's anyone's game. Italy get corner kick again, but this time Materazzi's header is off-target.

19 min - GOAL! The Azzurri level the score! And it's Marco Materazzi to make up for his earlier mistake. The defender scores from a Pirlo corner kick to set the score on level terms.

7 min - GOAL! Zidane converts penalty. France take lead! Zizou give France early lead by converting Materazzi's foul in a goal. His slow shot hits crossbar but bounces into the goal.

6 min - Penalty for France! Marco Materazzi fouls Florent Malouda in the penalty box and referee Elizondo gives the French a spotkick.
