Resident doctors from state and civic-run hospitals are threatening to go on strike again as they have not been given arrears.
Over 3,100 doctors, under the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), plan to observe a token strike from 2 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday.
“If our demands are not met, we will go on an indefinite strike from Wednesday,” said MARD representative Dr Jeevan Rajput. “The officials told us they would decide and give us arrears from either 2007 or 2008. But the Government Resolution issued this month does not even mention arrears.”
“There is no question of arrears. The demand is not valid as they are students not permanent employees,” said Medical Education Secretary Bhushan Gagrani.
The doctors were also irked as the salaries of those working in Nair, KEM and Sion hospitals were cut because of the July strike.
Gagrani said, “They were not working for one week so their pay will be cut.”
The doctors will continue to screen and treat swine flu patients even if they go on an indefinite strike.
