AFTER THE power and water crises, choked drains is another problem the Kanpurites are finding difficult to handle.
Residents of Kalyanpur in a meeting on Wednesday accused the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials of turning a blind eye towards the problem.
They also expressed their anger against KMC chief engineer Lalta Prasad for blatantly lying to municipal commissioner Badal Chatterjee on the issue of cleaning of drain in their locality that passes through Geeta Nagar up to Kanpur University.
Prasad had claimed before Chatterjee that the drain had been cleaned. Local BJP leader Ashok Singh, along with residents of the areas, called on Chatterjee on Tuesday and complained about non-cleaning of drains. However, when Chatterjee inquired about the matter from Prasad, he outright refuted the allegation and asserted that the drain had been cleaned last year.
However, the residents claimed that the drain had never been cleaned. Enraged over the statement of the chief engineer, residents of Kalyanpur held a meeting today and demanded an inquiry into the matter. It was decided on the occasion that divisional commissioner Anita Bhatnagar-Jain would be requested to order a probe into the matter and expose Prasad’s lie.
Before the onset of monsoon each year, tenders are invited for cleaning of drains. However during monsoon almost the entire city becomes a cesspool. After power and water crises, water logging is a major issue and after every monsoon claims are made that the city will be freed from water logging next year.

{{/usCountry}}During the tenure of last municipal commissioner Arvind Singh, the cleaning of drains could not be carried out due to boycott of contractors. As the boycott still continues, the KMC has taken up the responsibility on itself to clean the drains. However, keeping in view the enormity of the task it is doubtful that the task could be accomplished before the onset of monsoon.
