These steps might be a big news for political purposes but would not help in finding a lasting solution to the lingering Kashmir issue, the hardline faction of the Hurriyat Conference said.

"The economic backwardness of the state is inter-linked with the prevailing political situation.

"Till the Kashmir problem is resolved in accordance with wishes and aspirations of the people, rail or plane services will not make any difference to the condition of the people," an amalgam spokesman said.

On the other hand, the ruling National Conference said such steps were aimed at making the state economically strong.

"The dream of state's tallest leader Sheikh Abdullah has been fulfilled today with the conversion of Srinagar Airport into an internatinal airport," NC General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said.
