The district, around 40 km south of Srinagar, was on the boil on Thursday. One protester was injured in stone pelting and violent protests. The protests followed the killing and alleged defacing of a local militant in an encounter on Wednesday evening in central Kashmir's Budgam district.

The police said it only effectively imposed Section 144, banning assembly of more than four people. Security agencies feared protests after Friday prayers.

However, locals alleged a strict curfew was imposed in the town. The slain militant, identified as Touseef Ahmad Dar, a resident of Pirchoo village in Pulwama, was associated with Hizbul Mujahideen.

Pertinently, the locals clashed with forces on Thursday, resulting in injuries to many protesters and police personnel.
