Bemoaning the poor standard of school education in the state of Tamil Nadu, Anna University vice-chancellor D Viswanathan on Friday suggested for revamping the system with urgency.

Responding to a question at a news conference in the city, he said due attention should be given to remove the ills plaguing primary and secondary education in the state. The abysmally low standard of education at the school level has adverse effect on higher education where students at the college level are unable to cope with, he observed.

The vice-chancellor of the premier varsity said that suggestions to improve the scenario have been forwarded to the Department of School Education. Viswanathan said he was not at all in favour of the move to change the examination pattern at the higher secondary level.

On the varsity’s ban on the use of cell phones by students in the colleges affiliated to it, he said the Syndicate had decided to take action against those institutions which were not adhering to the dictum.
