Union minister of state for home, Kiren Rijiju will head for Nagaland on Tuesday to take stock of operations against the hostile-again National Socialist Council of Nagaland faction headed by the Myanmar-based SS Khaplang (NSCN-K).
The NSCN-K had in March junked a 14-year ceasefire agreement with New Delhi before carrying out a series of strikes against security forces, primarily Assam Rifles (AR) across Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
The deadliest of its strikes in Mon district of Nagaland on May 3 claimed the lives of eight security personnel, including seven of AR. Some of these attacks were coordinated by the newly-floated United National Liberation Front of Western South East Asia helmed by the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independence).
“Rijiju will visit (central Nagaland’s) Mokokchung town for a meeting with senior AR officials to take stock of counter-insurgency operations and the security scenario,” a defence spokesperson told HT on Monday.
The AR had intensified its operations following the May 3 attack, which was preceded by another deadly ambush by the outfit on the paramilitary force in Khonsa district of Arunachal Pradesh in April.
“Apart from certain pockets of Nagaland, the NSCN-K is operating from Myanmar and parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam,” the defence spokesperson said, adding that the security forces have been taking care not to cause collateral damage while going all out against the rebels.
