HAVE YOU seen a two-feet radish, two-feet pumpkin or a ‘Mahatma Gandhi’, helicopter and joker made of flowers and vegetables? Check these out at the Raj Bhawan where the Annual Flower & Vegetable Show opened on Saturday.
Hundreds of chrysanthemum, pansies, petunias, dahlias and more are on display in various groups at the show. Two new varieties of Cyclamaent and Nicotinia won the admiration of all the visitors. The entrance to the garden has a special section of vegetables, salad and flower decorations in full bloom.
Befitting the occasion, various participants had displayed flower-bedecked structures of Gandhi, animals, fish, helicopters and houses. Then, there were flower boards, marriage mandaps, arches and rangolis made of flower petals.
Earlier, Minister of Horticulture, Raj Kishore Singh inaugurated the show. As many as 1,879 participants, have put up 6,049 specimens at the exhibition. Various competitions in 34 categories have been organised. Stalls of some government departments, and Horticulture Marketing Department were also set up for displaying their products.
Deputy Director, Horticulture, SB Sharma said, “ For the first time in the 35-year-old competition, Cyclament and Nicotinia were displayed, the curator of these varieties has brought the bulbs of these plants in the month of October from the mountain region and developed it in the city.”

{{/usCountry}}Sofiya Siddiqui of Municipal Nursery School won the competition of flower decoration, while Harshit Sharma of Prag Narayan Road won the flower decoration in the category of over-14 participants. Bina Singh made a joker out of a gourd, while head curator of Raj Bhawan had made a beautiful statue if Gandhi by using vegetables and flowers.
Beautifully decorated marriage mandaps by LDA and Raj Bhawan garden staff attracted huge crowds. Products of Food Preservation Department were also displayed. Reneculous bagged the prize for the best flower of the show. Prizes for the best garden would be announced on Sunday.
