Bangladesh's main opposition Awami League on Friday said it was against holding of general elections under the current election commissioners even as the government accused it of planning to foil the voting set for 2007.
Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil told reporters after a meeting with senior colleagues that there "will be no elections under the current chief election commissioner and the two newly appointed commissioners."
"It is clear that this set up is a plan not only to rig the polls, but the voters list itself," he charged as reported by the media.
Jalil said already a strike has been called for next Sunday to protest the appointment of the two new commissioners and tougher action plan would be announced from a rally in Dhaka later this month.
"We will not sit until we succeed in forcing these people out of the election commission," Jalil added.
Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alleged that Awami League's ultimate plan was to foil the 2007 general elections, as they do not stand any chance of winning the polls.
"The main objective of Awami League is to foil the elections, therefore, they are making various excuses," he said while inaugurating an extended meeting of the BNP's youth front. "We all want fare elections because BNP stands a better chance of winning the elections if there is a fare vote."
