Verma’s name was announced in New Delhi by senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu after the party’s Central Election Committee’s decision to the effect. Party president Rajnath Singh presided over the meeting.

The last date for filing nominations for the by-poll is November 17. The scrutiny will be held the next day while the last day of withdrawal of nomination is November 20. The counting would take place on December 7.

The State BJP Election Committee had suggested two names -former MP Phoolchand Verma and Devendra Verma. The party succeeded in persuading the former MLA’s elder son Veerendra Verma who was reportedly keen for the party ticket.

A post-graduate, Devendra Verma (32) is at present a corporator of Khandwa Municipal Corporation. Recently, he was elected as the district BJP delegate in organisational polls.

Veerendra Verma told Hindustan Times that the party’s decision to give ticket to Devendra was recognition of his late father’s loyalty with and services to the party.
