Here’s another possible feather in our caps. The Kalka-Shimla Railway may soon be on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Built during the British period, cutting through Shivalik ranges of the lower Himalayas, the line is a fine specimen of 19th century engineering.
Besides the Himalayan line, Assam’s Majuli Island — the world’s largest mid-river deltaic island — is also among the sites the United Nations will consider for inclusion in the World Heritage list.
According to UNESCO, “The Committee (meeting in Qubec, Canada from 2-10 July) will also review the state of conservation of the 30 World Heritage sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. They may also decide to add new sites to the list of properties whose preservation requires special attention.”
The List in Danger features sites, which are threatened by a variety of problems — natural disasters, pillaging, pollution and poorly managed mass tourism. Thirteen natural and 34 cultural sites have been submitted for inscription, and new sites are added each year to the list.
According to UN body, the Canada meeting will decide whether to continue to keep Germany’s Dresden Elbe Valley on the cultural landscape list or not because of a bridge having been built in the heart of the landscape.
