Chicago is the first movie directed by the Pittsburgh born Rob Marshall. A native of Wisconsin, he's the twin brother of interior designer Maura Powell and older brother of director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall.

The three were raised mostly in Pittsburgh — first Penn Hills, then two different homes in Squirrel Hill — by their father, Rob, who taught English at the University of Pittsburgh, and their mother, Anne, who was an administrator in the Pittsburgh school system for many years.
Anne also taught at Pitt, heading the elementary education department there. The Marshalls sold their house along Beechwood Boulevard in Squirrel Hill and retired to Sag Harbor, Long Island, about a year and a half ago.
Marshall has been associated with successful television series prior to making a mark with Chicago. The film has already won for him 13 nominations and is likely to sweep the Oscars on Sunday night.
