In yet another brazen display of lawlessness on trains, the second in 10 days, robbers looted passengers on a train a couple of hours after it left Mumbai before going on a shooting spree, killing two people and injuring four.
The incident occurred in the general compartment of the Mumbai-Jaipur Aravali Express on Friday night between Vapi and Valsad.
Four robbers went on a shooting and looting spree once the train crossed the Vapi station. Two people died on the spot. Four were injured in the incident, according to officials.
On December 22, armed men looted passengers of their valuables and cash totalling over Rs 56,000 on the Mumbai-Lucknow Pushpak Express before raping a young woman and throwing out three passengers who resisted them.
Railway police failed to act in either incident.
"It is impossible for security guards to keep vigil in all compartments simultaneously," a senior official said.
