The road was opened for inspection by the Border Road Task Force (BRTF) on Tuesday evening, commander of the BRTF SK Doon told PTI over phone on Wednesday.

Rohtang pass, located at an altitude of 3978 metres, is covered with thick snow due to heavy snowfall in winter and was closed on December 15, Doon said.

The BRTF commander said the road would be opened to the general public after 10 days.

He said the exercise to open Rohtang pass started in mid-February, when a large number of BRTF personnel and labourers were engaged.

He said nine bulldozers and three snow cutters were pressed into service by BRTF teams and 150 labourers were required to clear the road to Rohtang, which links Lahaul-Spiti with the world.

The opening of Rohtang pass will provide much needed relief for people of Lahual-Spiti whose road link was cut off since mid-December.
