Simon, who was a silver medallist in Sydney, lost his round of 16 bout to the Egyptian 36-24, a decision which prompted howls of derision from the crowd.

"I was robbed by the judges. This is my last Olympics and I will now retire," said Simon.

The Romanian team has lodged a protest over the result and the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) is due to rule on the matter later on Sunday.
