RESPONDING TO Supreme Court directives for time-bound modernisation of abattoirs, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has chalked out a one-year deadline for constructing a Rs 2 crore state-of-the-art slaughterhouse near Devguradia trenching ground.

As per a draft proposal prepared by the IMC Health Department, the abattoir would be shifted from its present site at Khajrana to a modern facility near the landfill site by March next year. To be spread over five acres the proposed slaughterhouse would be a ‘zero water discharge’ facility conforming to international hygiene standards and boast on-site effluent disposal plant (EDP) as well as in-house sewage treatment apparatus.
A portion of the slaughterhouse premises would be reserved as a green belt, and slaughter and disposal of carcass would be carried out as prescribed by National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) guidelines. Of the total project cost, Rs 1 crore would be provided by the Centre with the balance shared equally between the State Government and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).
A joint team of IMC and PCB officials, including Mayor-in-Council in-charge of Health Rajendra Rathore and PCB Regional Manager A K Aggarwal toured the site on Friday to flesh out the bare bones abattoir proposal.
