A sum of Rs 13,100 crore had been earmarked for “Sarva Shiksha Abhaiyan” (education for all) scheme, while the higher education sector had been allocated Rs 2,000 crore, Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan said at a function in Sencottah, about 70 km from here, for celebrating the birth anniversary of Kamaraj.

The Centre had allocated Rs 8,000 crore for providing noon meal to schoolchildren across the country.

He said the number of school dropouts in the country had already dropped to 76 lakh now from 3.20 crore in 2001 and the Centre was hopeful of achieving nil dropout by the end of 2011.

He noted the Tamil Nadu government was also taking steps to improve the education sector and has launched a scheme -- “success” -- under which all students below 16 would get quality education by 2015.
