The civic administration has come up with a proposal for scientific landfill of 142-hectare Kanjur dumping ground at a cost of Rs 4,487 crore for the next 25 years.
The proposal will be tabled before the civic Standing Committee on Monday.
This comes after the proposal of Rs 4,600 crore of the Deonar dumping ground was rejected by the standing committee two weeks ago.
According to the proposal, the Kanjur dumping ground will handle 4,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, of which 1,000 will be composed and rest will be used to generate electricity.
Of 142 hectares, the Coastal Regulation Zone affects 76 hectares while the rest would be available for the landfill project.
On an average, Mumbai produces 6,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste every day.
“There was no provision of waste segregation in the Deonar dumping proposal and it was too costly, so we rejected it. We will study the Kanjur proposal and decide whether to go ahead (with it),” said Ravindra Waikar, chairman of the Standing Committee.
