Naveen Kumar Goswami’s family of six had been making ends meet with a paltry R6,500 after the engineering student’s father died.
But he has turned around the fortunes of his family after landing a job with a US-based company with a fat pay packet of Rs 50 lakh per annum.
The 23-year-old B.Tech student has bagged the position of Field Engineer with the Helix Energy Systems.
“To say I am surprised, will be an understatement. I was simply speechless. It was an emotional moment for me. I never thought that I will get such a huge package. I have always been interested in research,” said Goswami.
A keen learner, Goswami has also been interested in computer science. He has also represented the Southeast Asia region in the International Science Conference 2012, held in Russia.
“I scored 58% in the semester exams. All Indian companies that were coming to the college for placement were looking for people with 60-70% marks. But, I did not lose hope. I directly applied on the company’s website and the process started,” he said.
Goswami’s father died of a heart attack in 2008. He got a seat at the Galgotia University in second year through the Uttar Pradesh State entrance examination (SEE), in which he ranked 202.

{{/usCountry}}“I couldn’t get education loan as there was no security to furnish. My mother then arranged for a gold loan. With my first salary, I will get her jewellery back,” he added.
Goswami, who hails from Agra, will be joining the company in Texas from July 1.
“After my father’s death, I was completely shattered. I decided that I would now take care of my family. Though my elder brother works as a private salesman in Bihar, I wanted to share the responsibility,” he said.
Galgotia University chancellor, Suneel Galgotia, said that Goswami had made the university proud. “Many students from our university have bagged lucrative job offers. We aim to provide quality education to all students,” he said.
But there were other perceptions too. “Such kind of offers are interesting only from the outside. Students might miss out on their chance to learn. Freshers who start their career on a lower salary have more opportunity to gain experience,” said Manish Sabharwal, chairman, TeamLease Services, Bangalore.
