Pay Rs 500 per square foot and get illegal construction regularised in the satellite townships of Kalyan and Dombivli. This directive was issued by the Urban Development Department to the Municipal authorities.
The move would secure the fate of a majority of the 78,000 illegal structures under the jurisdiction of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). Sixty per cent of the structures in KDMC are illegal, affecting half a million people.
The directive, which comes into effect immediately, will regularise all illegal structures - commercial and residential - built till the cut-off date of January 1, 2004.
To be legalised, a flat owner will have to shell out a regularisation fee and development cost to the government, which could be around 50 per cent of the present market cost of the construction.
The penalty collected will be used to create a development fund, which will be used for development of the area.
Political observers said the regularisation move would help the Democratic Front government gain advantage in the BJP-Shiv Sena dominated KDMC.
“We have issued the directive based on the Kakodkar committee report,” said Ramanand Tiwari, who was promoted as additional chief secretary, urban development department on Monday.
Had the state government heeded to the recommendations of the five-member committee headed by former Metropolitan Commissioner SR Kakodkar and reined in corrupt KDMC officials, illegal construction there might have been nipped in the bud.

{{/usCountry}}The re-development of a building in future, if undertaken, will be done as per the built-up area regularised, said a senior official in the Urban Development Department, on condition of anonymity.
A public interest litigation was filed in Bombay High Court against the illegal construction. The court wanted to know if the government wants to legalise them.
Earlier, the government had issued an ordinance regularising unauthorised structures in Ulhasnagar.
