Chidambaram announced a whopping outlay of Rs 83,000 crore for defence in fiscal 2005-06.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that over Rs 34,300 crore would be set aside for "capital expenditure" or the acquisition of defence hardware.

The outlay for the last fiscal was Rs 77,000 crore and Chidambaram said the actual expenditure had matched budget estimates after a period of several years.
