"It should be discussed by party leaders after the Uttar Pradesh assembly election results. They will realise she cannot lead the party properly," he wrote in his weekly column in a local Marathi daily.

Keeping in mind the larger interest of their party, Congress leaders like Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Ashok Gehlot, Veerappa Moily, AK Antony, Shivraj Patil and Vilasrao Deshmukh should take the initiative in discussions on a change of leadership, Vaidya suggested.

He said leaders aged between 45 and 60 years, "particularly those who are blindly following" Gandhi, should think of a change in leadership.

"Of course, this will be dubbed as rebellion by the media but Congress leaders should simply ignore it. The resurrection of the party is more important," he opined, adding that the century-old party would slip to fourth position in Uttar Pradesh.
