Following the new transport commissioner’s promise to crack down on the Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) slack work culture and cut down red tape at transport offices, the RTO has installed touch screen information kiosks and form vending machines at major transport offices across the state.
A centralised call centre for answering all RTO queries and online payments are next in the line
“I want to cut down crowds at RTOs. We have made all the forms available online and on touch screen vending machines,” Transport Commissioner Deepak Kapoor said. “The next (measure) will be online fee payments in the next two months.”
The touch screen machines have been provided in association with the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA). “The transport department has requested us to provide more such machines at transport offices in Mumbai to cut down the huge crowd of people that visits RTO offices,” WIAA chairman Nitin Dossa said.
“We have completed installation at Mumbai’s three offices and Thane, Baramati, Satara and Nashik. The set up in the entire state will be complete by February,” Prashant Walunj of Phoenix Microsystems that developed the information kiosks and vending machines told Hindustan Times.
“The machines will cater to all kinds of information about the RTO and give out forms,” he said. “The forms that will be taken from the machine will bear the name of the person who uses the machine to avoid misuse.”
