On the very first day of the start of PG admissions under one roof at Pravesh Bhawan this morning, the student leaders backed by their supporters barged -into the Pravesh Bhawan and forcibly closed the admission counters.

Policemen deployed there remained mute spectators as the rowdy elements chased away the students gathered at the Pravesh Bhawan to complete their admission formalities.

Taking cognisance of the recent disruption of admission process at different departments by a section of student leaders, the AU authorities had decided to centralise the PG admissions at the Pravesh Bhawan under tight security. The varsity also arranged for armed cops as well as its own security staff to man the gates of the Pravesh Bhawan.

However, a large number of student leaders who had issued threats to stop the PG admission process barged into the Pravesh Bhawan and ultimately disrupted the PG admissions at around 1 pm which had begun at 9 am sharp. The student leaders held a meeting in support of their demand of seat hike and threatened to continue their protest against the varsity authorities. The students left the Pravesh Bhawan in a procession after conducting the meeting.

Additional City Magistrate, AU Examination Controller, Proctor, members of Proctorial Board and several AU officials were present at the Pravesh Bhawan at the time of incident. On being contacted, Proctor Prof Jata Shankar said that the admissions for the day were almost complete as all the students called had reported to the counters and submitted the fee except a few due to the intrusion of the student leaders. Prof Jata Shankar said that the varsity was aware of the threat issued by the student leaders and therefore closed the main Pravesh Bhawan gate to safeguard the cash collected during the admissions.

Prof Jata Shankar, however, expressed unhappiness over the unruly behaviour of the so-called student leaders. He said that the admissions will be started from 9 am on August 3 onwards and adequate measures would be taken to ensure that nothing unpleasant occurs.
