The girl ran away from her home after her mother allegedly beat her and reached Salempur village near Gangapur town, over 140 kms from Jaipur, local media reports said on Tuesday.

The residents of the small village have since become the girl's guardians. Not only did they buy her a new dress but they have also admitted her to the local school.

She is free to live in any of the houses in the village but she is emotionally attached to the family of Nawal Gurjjar.

"She came here over three months back. Her accent is that of people from Uttar Pradesh. She says that her name is Jyoti and she was a resident of Lal Kuan village in Uttar Pradesh," Gurjjar said.

The girl says her father's name is Kahaniya Lal, her mother is Teji Devi while Suraj, Dheeraj and Neeraj are her brothers and Shilpa is her elder sister. Her father is a truck driver.

The villagers reported the incident to the police at Gangapur two days after her arrival. "The report had been lodged with us and we are investigating it," a police official said.
