RUNNER-UP FOR the president’s post at Allahabad University Students’ Union in last academic session, Raghunath Dwivedi has filed a writ petition challenging the order of V-C AU Prof Rajan Harshe.

The V-C, it is noteworthy, had rejected Dwivedi’s representation seeking his nomination on the president’s post being the next candidate in the order of number of votes, as AUSU president Ajit Singh Yadav’s election had been set aside by an earlier High Court order.
The vice-chancellor, in pursuance of the Supreme Court’s interim verdict, had rejected the representation of Raghunath Dwivedi, saying that the election of AUSU would now be held as per the Lyngdoh Panel recommendations, which provided that only students up to the age of 28 can contest the election of students’ union throughout the country. Therefore, the claim of Raghunath Dwivedi could not be sustained for the post as he has crossed this upper age limit, the VC had added.
However, Raghunath Dwivedi, in the present writ petition, has contended that Lyngdoh Commission’s recommendations would not apply on previous elections as the election for the same had taken place a year ago before the recommendations were implemented. Besides, he had claimed that the post of president of AUSU could not remain vacant.

It is pertinent to mention that on an earlier petition filed by Raghunath Dwivedi, the High Court had quashed the election of Ajit Kumar Singh Yadav as AUSU president.
Later on, acting on an application of Dwivedi, the court had directed the vice-chancellor to decide within a week the representation of Raghunath Dwivedi who had sought his appointment on the post of AUSU president as he had secured the second place. The V-C rejected the representation, hence Raghunath filed the present writ petition.
