The district health department has managed to implement family planning programme more successfully in rural areas as compared to city.

The fresh data of the family planning programme reveals that in the year 2005-06 the department achieved only 43 per cent target in urban areas whereas in the rural area the department was able to achieve over 65 per cent sterilisation target. Against the target of 28,868 for the year 2005-06 the department conducted 24,029 sterilisation cases, with major success in the rural area.

But despite the good performance in the rural area the Allahabad district managed to achieve 10th position amongst 33 SIFPSA-sponsored districts in UP.
The health department claimed that in the year 2005-06 there was six per cent increase in both vasectomy and tubectomy cases.

But still the district was 17 per cent behind the target. There were also reports of negligence, poor post-operative care and post- tubectomy death of women, which also affected the success of the programme in the district.

Additional chief medical officer and incharge family planning programme Dr SC Gupta said that intensive efforts were being made to motivate male population to adopt family planning programme.

There was still lack of awareness among male over the importance of family planning programme.

"In rural areas while we managed to achieve 65 per cent target, in urban area the target was a little over 43 per cent. If the target is improved in urban area we will be able to secure position among the first five in the Family Planning programme in UP," he added.
