S-I Aqeel Ahmed gets unsung burial

IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE that cops have heart of stone. But that they could be so insensitive even to their own colleague came as a shock. Sub-inspector Aqeel Ahmed, who died of bullet injury inflicted by his own service revolver, had no cop to pay him last respect on Wednesday. He was buried at the Eidgah graveyard without the guard of honour extended either by the Kanpur police or the Auraiya police. As per police rule book, when a police dies on duty, he is entitled for full guard of honour, otherwise a salami guard should pay tribute to the departed soul.

As per police rule book, when a police dies on duty, he is entitled for full guard of honour, otherwise a salami guard should pay tribute to the departed soul.

However, in case of Ahmed, the administration ignored the protocol and after the post-mortem, his body was handed over to his kin. Later, sub-inspector Ahmed was silently cremated at Eidgah graveyard. When HT contacted senior officials about the violation of protocol during the cremation of the sub-inspector Ahmed, they feigned ignorance and said it was quite possible that Auraiya police had given the last salute to the deceased.

However, sources revealed that no ceremony was held at the police lines of Auraiya, too. Officials said Auraiya ASP was there to represent them. But the fact remains that no one from Auraiya turned up when the cop died on Tuesday or even on Wednesday when his body was carried to the graveyard for burial.

SHO Babupurwa DN Singh preferred to remain inside his office when the funeral procession passed from the main road. SSP Alok Singh said that guard of honour should have been given to Aqeel at Auraiya police line.
