Speaking on behalf of his team Tendulkar put his shoulder behind efforts to conserve the tiger, whose population has dwindled alarmingly in India.

“At the start of the century, there were nearly 40,000 tigers in India. Today, that number has shrunk to 1,700 and we are losing at least one tiger a month. The rate at which the tiger is being hunted down is alarming,” said Tendulkar.

“When I was growing up, I was told there were once creatures called dinosaurs, which are extinct. Unless we do something about it, we could perhaps end up talking about the tiger in similar manner to future generations,” said Tendulkar.

Tendulkar was quick to say he was no expert in the field, but was earnest in his appeal. “I feel the tiger should be allowed to live without disturbance in the forests. As we have our own homes and territories, the tiger too has its own territory, and we should not disturb its habitat. That would be the best way to ensure that the tiger survives in our forests.
