Sachin Pilgaonkar asserts that Marathi cinema was huge even before the mushrooming of multiplexes and media hype. But somewhere along the time, several new directors came up and some lost the plot. And the critics weren’t lenient either.
Pilgoankar, however, has given Marathi cinema some of the biggest hits like Navri Mile Navryala, Gammat Jammat, Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi, Navra Mazha Navsacha and Amhi Satpute. His latest film Ideachi Kalpana that stars Ashok Saraf, Mahesh Kothare and himself releases on December 31. Presented by Everest Entertainment Limited and Sushriya Chitra, the film is directed and co-produced by Pilgaonkar.
“I’m making a Marathi film after two years. Ideachi Kalpana is an out-and-out entertainer. Though it is predominantly a comedy, there are a lot of other emotions involved,” Pilgaonkar explains. The actor has also turned music composer for the first time, composing two songs for this film. “I’ve been singing for 25 years now. When I made Avdhoot Gupte (music director of Ideachi Kalpana) listen to my tunes, he asked me to compose the antara. So I composed and sung two songs,” he says. Comparisons with Kishore Kumar are inevitable. But the actor-director-producer and now composer and singer says, “It’s wrong to be compared to Kishoreda. Two songs can’t make me Kishore Kumar.”
Touted to be a laugh riot, Ideachi Kalpana is a situational comedy. “Slapstick or farcical comedy is not my forte. But people need to come into the theatres and watch these comedies. Natrang is the only recent Marathi film that saw a huge commercial success. Filmmaking is an expensive hobby, and you need to recover the money invested. The films can be out-of-the-box, but not out of the box office,” Pilgaonkar rues. He informs that he is working on adding subtitles to his film at a later stage.

{{/usCountry}}Right now, the actor is concentrating on Eka Peksha Ek’s fifth season on Zee Marathi. He hasn’t taken on any Hindi shows, but has started work on a Rajshri project. “I’m directing a film called Jaana Pehchana for Rajshri. I’m acting in it and have also sung a song for it. The film is a sequel of Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se and will be released in May next year,” Pilgaonkar concludes.
