The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday expelled one of its candidates for anti-party activities. Taking stern action against Balwinder Singh Bains, whose brother Simarjit Singh Bains had declared his independent candidature against party nominee Hira Singh Gabria from the Atam Nagar constituency, the SAD high command cancelled the former’s candidature from Ludhiana (south) and expelled the duo from the party.

Undeterred, Balwinder declared his independent candidature from Ludhiana (south). “I don’t need the support of any party. I had won by 23,000 votes in the SGPC elections,” he said.

Following the expulsion, the brothers’ loyalists, including SAD councillors Kanwaljit Singh Karwal, Parminder Singh Soma and Swarandeep Singh Chahal, resigned from the party.

Councillor Simarjit said they would field their supporters as independent candidates from Ludhiana (west), Ludhiana (east) and Gill (reserved). “We refused to bow before the SAD president,” he said.

Speaking on the SAD’s behalf, cabinet minister Gabria said the party would take action against Akali leaders who would support the Bains brothers.

Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura’s son Jaspal Singh is set to the fielded by the SAD from Ludhiana (south).

The SAD president had summoned the brothers and warned them to withdraw from the fray, but they failed to show up, the spokesman said.
