Despite the curfew in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur, Mohd. Rushid managed to get the perfect Eid gift for his 14-month-old son Zubair, who was suffering from a congenital heart condition-Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).

PDA is present in every child when they are in the mother’s womb. It’s a bypass for lungs since they are non-functional in the uterus. The bypass track closes within the first few days of birth. But this didn’t happen in Zubair’s case.

Dr Vikas Kohli, director, children’s heart institute, BLK SuperSpeciality Hospital, said, “Zubair’s condition resulted in flooding of the lungs. It also resulted in recurrent pneumonia and him remaining underweight. The child weighed just 7kg.”

The challenge lay in closing the opening without surgery, considering his age and weight. The procedure was successfully carried out under local anaesthesia on Tuesday.
