Inspired by the Tuscan town famous for its towers built by medieval merchants and Michelangelo's favourite white wine, Vernaccia, this is one restaurant where you'll always get a good meal with generous portions at unbelievably reasonable prices. In fact, it's pointless ordering more than two dishes, unless you're ravenously hungry. Our favourites: Insalata Caprese (mozzarella and tomato salad in a balsamic dressing), Cream of Mushroom Soup with Truffle Oil, Tagliatelle (ribbon pasta) with Herb-Flavoured Minced Duck Sauce, Yellow Peppers filled with Vegetable Risotto and Parmesan, and Milk-Fed Baby Lamb Chops with Grilled Vegetables. For dessert, try the Zabaglioni, Vanilla Panacotta or the Minestrone of Exotic Fruit. Wash the meal down with Illy Espresso.
Wine List: The Imperial has a well-researched wine list that resists the temptation of carrying the same labels that everyone else has. Though the list is crowded with French labels, at San Gimignano, you'll be better off ordering from the limited list of Italians: Gaja's
Sito Moresco 1998; Pio Cesare's Barolo and Barbaresco 1999; Masi's Costasera Amarone 2000; Frescobaldi's Luce Della Vite 1994 and 1995; Summus, Sant'Antimo, 1998 from Catello Banfi; and the lesser-known
Nero D'Avola, Deliella, 2000 from Principi di Butera, Sicily.
