The breakaway Nationalist Congress Party headed by PA Sangma on March 14 merged with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. The new party, known as Nationalist Trinamool Congress, will be led by Mamata. It will retain the ‘flower with grass’ symbol of the Trinamool Congress.

In another development, VC Shukla merged his recently-floated Rastriya Jantantrik Dal with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Shukla, alongwith Rafiq Sadiq, a former AICC member and son of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister GM Sadiq, were admitted to the party by BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu.
