C FOR cheetah, T for tiger - these are not a child's introduction to animals but codes in poacher Sansar Chand's diary. They do stand for animals — but those killed by Sansar and his gang over the years.
Sansar had meticulously maintained records since 1974. Then, it might have helped him track the skins sold and the rupees received. Now, it can help the CBI nail Sansar and his associates under the MCOCA.
According to a supplementary charge-sheet filed by the CBI in a Delhi court, the agency recovered the diary from Sansar's son Akash. "It contains details of trading done in 654 leopards, 40 tigers and 32 otter skins apart from other animals. The diary values these skins at Rs 1.38 crore," a source said.
The CBI had filed the charge-sheet on May 29 against Sansar's accomplice Satyabhan.
Sansar - who controlled almost 50 per cent of the trade in animal skins before he was arrested in June last year - uses a variety of codes. While AK and AG denote otters, panja stands for tiger's claws.
The CBI's interrogation of Sansar had lasted 10 days and run into 31 tapes. But the investigators could only guess the extent of his trade. Now they have it in writing.
