Saran discusses PM's G8 agenda in Moscow

India is one of the outreach countries identified by the Russian G8 presidency.

Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran on Thursday discussed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's agenda for the upcoming G8 summit in St Petersburg under the rotating presidency of Russia.

Saran participated in the meeting hosted by the Russian G8 Sherpa and Kremlin aide Igor Shuvalov for the Special Representatives of the G8 outreach countries to discuss the grouping's agenda.

India is one of the outreach countries identified by the Russian G8 presidency. India regards the themes of energy security, education and fight against infectious diseases as of contemporary concern that need serious deliberations not only by the G8 members but other major countries as well, an Indian Embassy release said at the end of Saran's two-day Moscow visit.

At the meeting with the Russian G8 Sherpa, the Foreign Secretary shared India's perspectives on these agenda items and made suggestions for international cooperation aimed at meeting these objectives.

India also circulated Non Papers on the themes during the meeting.

The Foreign Secretary also met his Russian counterpart - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Denisov and discussed a wide range of bilateral issues and exchanged views on topical regional and international matters.
