Sardar Sarovar dam height to be raised

In a major decision which will help drought-hit Gujarat, the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) has permitted raising the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam from 95 to 100 metres.

In a major decision which will help drought-hit Gujarat, the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) has permitted raising the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam from 95 to 100 metres.

The decision was taken at the 66th meeting of the NCA, presided by Union Water Resources Secretary A K Goswami and participated by representatives of the Narmada basin states -Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

According to an official announcement, the decision was taken by the Authority after careful consideration of clearance of both Environment and Rehabilitation and Resettlement sub-groups of the NCA and fulfillment of the requirements as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The multi-purpose mega project is proposed to be completed by June 2005.
