The great Indian arranged marriage is all about screening the would-be spouse. Now, Rakhi Sawant has taken the screening process literally — to the small screen. Is there any sanctity to matrimony held mainly to pump up the channel’s TRP ratings, you might ask. Well, we have seen teary-eyed pheras on the big screen before, haven’t we? And we know all that to be stage-managed. This does not concern Ms Sawant, nor does the fact that marriage may dent her career. She cites Aishwarya Rai as one whose career has not been hurt by matrimony. Hmm, delusional as well as a publicity hound. Which brings us to the question, is nothing private or sacrosanct anymore? The answer could be that if Jade Goody could die publicly, why are we tying ourselves up in knots over Ms Sawant tying the knot publicly? In fact, this is a win-win situation for her. If things don’t work out with the future Mr Sawant, she could always wriggle out by saying it was not a real marriage. It says quite a bit for Ms Sawant that her dream man is that model of marital fidelity Prince Charles.
