EXPRESSING DEEP concern over the deteriorating health situation of women in the State, as highlighted recently by the media, the MP Jan Adhikar Manch has decided to launch a ‘Save Our Mothers’ campaign in the State.
As the initial step towards this, the Jan Adhikar Manch – a network of voluntary organisations working in the field of health and other issues – organised a daylong workshop for field-level representatives of various organisations. The objective was to give them intensive information and training regarding this campaign.
Making introductory remarks, convener of the Manch Dr Vijay Gupta said the main reasons for the rising maternal mortality were – delay in recognising complications in first pregnancy, delay in getting pregnant women to medical facility (hospital/health centre) and finally pregnant women not getting any medical facility at all.
State coordinator of the Manch, Sandesh Bansal stressed the need for all sections of society including politicians, voluntary organisations and others to come forward and actively work on this issue and create awareness.
He said people’s representatives had a big role to play in creating awareness regarding various health schemes. Social worker Beena Bandopadhyay stressed on need of changing the mentality of males towards this issue.

{{/usCountry}}Health activist Sachin Jain spoke on role of media in this direction and said media could help in a big way by focusing on the issue. It would not only help in containing maternal deaths but also prevent gender disparity.
In the concluding session, the participants chalked out a work plan to implement the campaign at ground level. Representatives of NGOs working in Gwalior-Chambal divisions mainly participated in the workshop.
