The famous question, are you a man or a mouse, has taken on an altogether new connotation, if the Haryana police’s new project is anything to go by. Finding their official files gnawed away by pesky rodents, the force has inducted additional troops in the form of two white mice.
Apparently the white variety does not eat paper and is said to frighten the black ones away. Now some may smell a rat in this experiment but apparently the Haryana police have based this move on the fact that white mice are more robust than black ones. But we see problems arising soon. As we know, mice breed like rabbits. So when the two mighty mice become, say 20, what will the hapless force do? Bring in the cat brigade? Then we have the question of promotions and departmental honours. This could lead to cat and mouse games in an already beleaguered police force. Mice, as most scientists concur, are greatly inventive. So a day may come when the white mice and black marauders choose to join hands rather than rat on each other. Let’s see the police squeak by when that happens.
The Haryana police’s mouse trap project has found several other interested parties, namely the Punjab government and the Northern Railways, which have been traumatised by rodents. Whether their efforts will be successful is something we can chew on at a later date. But for the moment, it certainly pays for the Haryana police to have a mouse in the house.
