A WOMAN bought a chikankari shirt for her daughter from Canada. Nothing surprising considering the growing popularity and availability of the handicraft around the world, but the alarming part is that the shirt was made in China.

Lakhnavi chikankari is not only being produced in places outside Lucknow but also selling at exorbitant prices.
Keeping this in mind, several organisations working for the uplift of textiles and chikankari organised a workshop on Protecting Intellectual Property Rights Through Geographical Indication Act of the world famous Lucknow Chikan Craft.
In the workshop, several experts spoke on the importance of getting a registration under the Geographical Indication (GI) Act for Lucknow Chikan Craft that would benefit at least 5-7 lakh women and artisans engaged in chikan in Lucknow and surrounding areas. Network for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (NEED) with active support from Ministry of Textile, Government of India is going to take up this work of registeration.
Talking about benefits of GI registration of Lucknow Chikan Anil K Singh said firstly, Lucknow Chikan would get a legal identity, which would be conferred on it by the government itself. Secondly, it would prevent the misuse of the word ‘chikan’ and the art. Thirdly, the Chikankari workers can derive a premium and enhance their economic prosperity, as the GI registration would give them an exclusive right to use the name.
Several arts that have already been granted a GI registration are Chanderi, Mysore silk and Kancheepuram saris and Goa fenny and Nilgiri tea are in the pipeline for GI registration.
