Naik, along with Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot, was ordered a month's jail term by the Supreme Court for contempt of the apex court for granting fresh licenses to saw mills to operate within the restricted Tansa forest area limits despite an SC ban on such licences.

Following the SC order, Naik had resigned from the state cabinet and surrendered to the police on May 13 last and had been lodged in Thane Central Jail since then.

The former Minister, after being jailed, had complained of various complications, including heart problem, and was admitted to Sir JJ Hospital, where he was lodged in the ICU for almost a fortnight and underwent a series of tests.

Following this doctors opined that he was fit and he was sent back to the jail last week.
