When Sagar Pille (27) went to the Antop Hill police station near Dadar in north Mumbai ask about his two-year-old missing child Sandhya, all he got for an answer was: “Give us a written statement that you are satisfied with our investigations.”
“How can I give them a statement when I know that they are not doing anything to find my child? They just want to show their seniors that they are working,” Pille said.
On June 1 last year, Sandhya accompanied her mother, Bhubneswari (22), to a local shop. Pille said, “My wife told Sandhya to go home as the child had jaundice and she had some more shopping to do. After that, Sandhya disappeared.”
Pille, who runs a sugarcane shop nearby, filed a police complaint, naming two suspects —Ganesh Vellu Devendra and Gurgesh Vellu Devendra —who own a shop near his residence — a small one-room accommodation at Koliwada in north Mumbai.
Pille alleged, “There was some problem between our two families. A girl from their family and a boy from our family had married without the consent of the families. I know that they must have done it to avenge the marriage.”
He said, “Two months ago, the police called me and asked me to write the statement.” He also alleged that the police did not even interrogate the two suspects on the plea that they could not be found, “but I have seen them in my area”, he said.

{{/usCountry}}But Vishnu Soma Deokar, Senior Inspector, Antop Hill police station, said, “We have never asked him to make any such statement. Though the complainant had given us two names, we couldn’t fi nd any corroborative material. We had even conducted a lie-detector test.”
