Besides the judges of the apex Court and high court, the momentous occasion was graced by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

Among the dignitaries were the law officers and several senior advocates who were invited by the Supreme Court Bar Association, which organised the maiden Independence Day celebration at the apex Court lawn.

When asked to comment on the event, which was not practiced in the apex court for the past 56 years, the CJI said, "It is never late. A beginning has been made. Why do you go in the past".
