The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on controversial RJD MP from Bihar Mohd Shahabuddin, who is seeking bail in a case relating to recovery of sophisticated arms and ammunition from his possession, saying that it was not a normal case of keeping firearms.

"There was a telescopic device, bulletproof jackets etc," a bench comprising Justices GP Mathur and LS Panta said referring to the recoveries made by the police during a raid at the MP's Pratapur residence in Siwan district.

Observing that it was not a normal case of keeping firearms, the bench wanted to know from the jailed MP's counsel Nagender Rai whether the accused was having licence for them and if he can produce it.

Rai replied that he had the licence and it could be produced if some time was granted.

Referring to the recoveries, the bench observed "are you (Shahabuddin) a member of the armed forces and under what authority have you been keeping these?"

"You are not a security personnel. You do not require all these," the court further said and took strong objection to the fact that 1000 cartridges were recovered from the MP's house during the raid.
