About 50 traders and shopkeepers in Valparai in the district downed their shutters on Friday, to express solidarity to the Christian-run institutions, which remained closed today in Tamil Nadu, to protest against attacks in Orissa.

While all Christian-run schools in the city and the district declared holiday today, a little over 70 schools were closed in nearby Nilgiris district, police said.
Meanwhile, about 50 shops, run by Christians were closed in Valparai, with majority of the population being plantation workers, as part of expressing solidarity to the call given by Christian-run schools.
