FOUR CHILDREN died and another got critically injured when an un-controlled vehicle crushed them while they were crossing the road near Brahmadev Temple in Maharajpur on Sunday.
The incident took place at a few metres’ distance from the Maharajpur police station. Angry over the incidents, hundreds of residents blocked the highway for nearly an hour and pelted stones on several vehicles damaging them badly. The blockade was removed following an assurance of compensation of Rs 50,000 each to kin of the deceased.
The deceased have been identified as Tuntun (15), son of Valmiki, Anuj (12), son of Paras, Chandan (10), son of Sidheswar, and Indal (16), son of Chunnilal. The injured has been identified as Unail (11), son of Raggu.
All the deceased and injured were children of workers of Rama Brick Kiln field at Maharpur and were staying at the kiln along with their parents.
According to information, the children went to Brahmadev Temple to get the prasad. While crossing the road, a Scorpio vehicle hit them. Tuntun, Anuj and Chandan died on the spot whereas, Indul succumbed to injuries while on way to the hospital.
Unail was admitted to a private hospital in Maharajpur where his condition was stated to be critical.
Some eyewitnesses chased the Scorpio and nabbed driver identified as Ranjit Singh. Angry people later thrashed him and handed him over to the police. Within minutes after the spine-chilling incident, hundreds of workers and villagers came on the highway and blocked the road. They started pelting stones on other vehicles.
